A contemporary of the first generation of the École de Dakar, Souleymane Keïta's essentially abstract practice is singular and atypical, and stands apart from the times. He creates numerous series inspired by his history and daily life as a Senegalese man born in Gorée with Mandingo Malian origins. A prolific artist, Souleymane Keïta has created a vast body of work: canvases, drawings, tapestries, engravings, ceramics, textiles; using a variety of materials, from watercolor and oil paint to pencil, pastel and collage. The artist doesn't hesitate to question the boundaries of each medium, and adds elements taken from her surroundings to her works: keys, wood, sand, fabric and threads that give relief and make the visual narrative of the works enigmatic.
