Abdoulaye Sow

Biography

Abdoulaye Sow is a visual artist and the founder of SEN Cassia Occidentalis. Born in Senegal, he lives and works in Dakar. After completing his education, he trained at the National School of Arts (ENA), where he earned his diploma in 2014. Following years of perseverance through numerous challenges, Abdoulaye courageously launched his artistic career in 2023. His artistic practice draws inspiration from personal experiences and childhood memories, particularly the story of how his family used a medicinal plant commonly known as Mbant Maré. This plant was a remedy his mother used to cure him of malaria. From a young age, Abdoulaye suffered recurrent bouts of malaria, often leaving him weakened and hospitalised at the start of each school year. This cycle continued until his mother discovered a natural remedy that not only saved Abdoulaye from the devastating effects of malaria but also restored his strength and hope. Inspired by this transformative experience, Abdoulaye undertook extensive research into the plant’s properties and its potential to combat and eradicate malaria in Africa. This research has profoundly shaped his artistic approach, where he explores the intersections of art, African traditions, and medicinal practices. This deeply significant memory has ever since fuelled his passion for combining artistic expression with social commitment. He established SEN Cassia Occidentalis, a project dedicated to promoting the cultivation of this miraculous plant. Today, through his efforts, he highlights the importance of Cassia Occidentalis in the fight against malaria while honouring his mother. Abdoulaye Sow’s works have been showcased as part of the OFF programming for the 15th edition of the Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art, including an exhibition at Senegal’s Ministry of Environment and Ecological Transition under the auspices of the Minister of Environment.
