Hicham BERRADA

Presentation

Hicham Berrada, born in 1986 in Casablanca (Morocco), is a French-Moroccan artist specializing in contemporary art and installations. A creator of constantly evolving chemical tableaux, his approach is similar to that of a painter. His exhibitions combine art and scientific research. In 2006, he began studying at the Beaux-arts in Paris. In 2011, he joins Le Fresnoy. Hicham Berrada specializes in the creation of constantly evolving forms, akin to Art in Progress, using chemicals such as silicates, carbonates and sulfates, which react and precipitate in glass vats (a kind of beaker) containing a few liters of “homemade” solutions, or in a “basin” containing five thousand liters of water (work Arche, 2013). These moving forms depend on experimental conditions (nature and concentration of reagents, temperature, etc.). His creations draw on knowledge of the sciences (chemistry, fluid physics1, nanoscience, etc.). He or she may collaborate with a research laboratory. The “artist-laborantin” develops a practice that encompasses installation, performance, video, sound and photography. In September 2013, Hicham Berrada became a resident at the Villa Médicis. During the summer of 2019, he will be in residence in Lens, exhibiting at the Louvre-Lens, in the Pavillon de verre. He is represented by Galerie Kamel Mennour.
