Edwige NDJENG, born in 1981 in Douala, where she lives and works, explores in her work the stereotypes associated with the representation of women in Africa, using vibrant colors. At the center of ornamental compositions saturated with leaves, and sometimes flowers, La femme à la jambe pliée imposes her naked body, opulent and imposing. Although she may seem trapped by her surroundings, she nonetheless retains the freedom to challenge the viewer, revealing a presence that combines power and vulnerability. In Le sel des mbengetaires, the artist tackles another type of stereotype, this time linked to the exotic vision of the tourist, including the African of the diaspora returning home after success abroad. Spectral figures stand out in the center of the canvas, against a backdrop of precarious dwellings and more imposing constructions.
