MATTHEW EGUAVOEN WAS BORN IN 1988 IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA. HE LIVES AND WORKS IN LAGOS. Matthew Eguavoen attended the University of Port Harcourt, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil and Structural Engineering. It was during his final year at university that he decided to pursue his passion for art. As a result, he learned and developed his artistic practice on his own. A self-taught painter, he turned to figuration, mainly creating portraits using oil paint, acrylic paint, charcoal and graphite pencil. In doing so, he documents the stories of his models, focusing on their emotions and attitudes. Matthew Eguavoen's work addresses societal, economic and political issues through the complex intersectionality that Nigerians face throughout their lives. He is particularly interested in the constraints of social ideology, human existence and survival. As an artist, he is deeply moved by the impact his work can have on his immediate environment and on the world at large. In this sense, he is interested in how societal, political and economic imbalances take over human happiness and corrode the essence of society. Matthew Eguavoen's work can be found in collections in West Africa, the United States, Europe and North America. Source : https://afikaris.com/fr/artists/45-matthew-eguavoen/
