Emma Prempeh lives and works in London. She studied at Goldsmiths University, London, from where she graduated in 2019 winning the Alumno/Space 2020 scholarship. She recently completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art as part of the LeverHulme Trust Arts Scholarship, winning the 2022 Valerie Beston Trust Arts Award. The starting point for Prempeh's paintings is the question of blackness - the tonal properties of color form the basis of her paintings and a cinematic underpinning that invokes and projects memories of events, people and places to underscore an appreciation of time and ancestral relationships, identity and transformation. Schlag metal is an alloy of copper and zinc (brass) that can be substituted for gold leaf. Prempeh applies it to very specific areas of his canvases, often large ones. Over time, this material oxidizes, creating slow, vivid visual changes that animate the image and create a meta-narrative around our experiences of the passage of time, memory and its representation. Prempeh occasionally experiments with the projection of still and moving images to create pictorial installations that invite further experimental and figurative encounters with his work.
