Biography

Mzili, born in Uganda, creates paintings that draw from his immediate environment—both natural and man-made—to depict scenarios of heroism that highlight human strength and empathy. His works blend seemingly unrelated elements into cohesive frames, often set in intimate spaces where deeply personal interactions take place. These settings frequently merge multiple spaces into a single composition, with titles that describe the interactions and suggest broader associations. Mzili’s collection of objects, environments, and his relationships with them reflect the processes of identity formation in Uganda. People often use their appearance, belongings, and surroundings—as well as the interactions within these—to express their self-perception. At the same time, these traits are analyzed by others to understand the identities of those around them. Mzili’s vibrant compositions aim to inspire awe and delight through the interplay of color and subject matter.
